Phillies questions answered: Nick Williams, second base situation and evaluating trade deadline

What was your impression on the trades made by the Phillies? The players dealt were all rentals with the hopes of them having some mid-season trade value. Did the Phillies get back the value they were hoping for on those guys coming into the season?

Overall I was impressed by the haul General Manager Matt Klentak pulled in, but even more so by the fact that he was able to move four veteran players considering the circumstances. Jeremy Hellickson was not doing much on the mound to increase his trade value, neither was Joaquin Benoit and Howie Kendrick made two trips to the disabled list this year and was hit in the hand with a pitch not too long before he was sent to the Nationals. Yet he moved all three, in addition to Pat Neshek, who was the only one that was expected to definitely be traded.

Not only did he deal four veterans, opening up roster spots and playing time for younger players, he also brought back a pretty nice return. He added four Single-A players, a Double-A prospect and a fourth major league outfielder in Hyun Soo Kim. They added about $1 million in international bonus pool money as well. Obviously you won’t be able to fully grade these deals for years until you see if any of these lottery tickets (Single-A and Double-A prospects) hit but …
